The ‘Buffy’ animated series that never happened

That’s the four minute “presentation” of “Buffy the Animated Series,” a show that was originally developed in 2001 and greenlit in 2002. I remember it getting a lot of coverage at the time - “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon and big time comic book guy (and current “Heroes”writer) Jeph Loeb were going to co-executive produce - and it looked awesome, but most fans pretty much forgot about it until now. It was going to be on Fox Kids (the cartoon was to be produced by 20th Century Fox, just like the live action show), but that stopped existing in 2002 (much to the dismay of “Eek! The Cat” fans everywhere). After that, producers couldn’t find a place for the show, so it died.
It was meant to take place during season 1, thus the references in the clip to Xander’s crush on Buffy and Willow’s crush on Xander. All of the main voices were to return for the show, except Sarah Michelle Geller, though voice actor Gieslle Loren, who also played Buffy in a few video games, did a credible job at filling in.
The clip has given some fans, at least on Facebook, hope (more than likely false hope, but still) of the project returning. Given the popularity of the current “Buffy” comic published by Dark Horse Comics, it’s probably at least fractionally more possible than it was a couple years ago.
