Finally, a reason to watch ‘Dance War’

Friday, February 15th, 2008 by Albert Ching

At least a couple minutes of it.

This Monday, they’ll be using it to premiere this season’s crop of contestants for “Dancing with the Stars.” The season is scheduled to start on March 18, and there’s not a whole lot of speculation out there as to who’s going to compete, but there’s been talk of last season vet Marie Osmond’s brother, Donny. Joy.

‘Dance War’ anticipation station!

OK, I’ll be honest. Despite my reputation as a slavish “Dancing with the Stars” fanboy, I’m actually not psyched at all for “Dance War,” 7 tonight on ABC. The fact that it’s on against the almighty “American Gladiators” makes it even less likely that I’ll check it out (I will DVR it, and its mere presence there will hector me into watching it, but I bet we’ll both feel a little used by the experience). It’s two hours, so I’ll at least probably watch the last hour. I guess.

What it does have going for it is some of the goofiest promotional images I’ve seen for a show in a long time:

Other than the obvious need for programming, I’m really not sure why this show…exists. It’s called “Dance War,” but it’s actually some sort of “So You Think You Can Dance”/”American Idol” hybrid, since they’re looking for people who can dance and sing. So why not call it “Dance and Sing War”? And what do Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba know about singing? And after seeing the “Dancing with the Stars” live tour, I’m not exactly super-confident in Drew Lachey’s abilities as a host.

I can already predict my reaction: Needs more Len Goodman .
