‘Hannah Montana’ - (not really) naked ambition

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 by Albert Ching

So all the buzz in what apparently was a rather slow news day was over Miley Cyrus and her “embarrassment” over pictures - by famed photog Annie Leibovitz - in this month’s Vanity Fair that picture the 15 year old juggernaut “semi-topless.”

That is of course, all goofy exaggeration and hype. She’s not semi-topless; she’s wearing a towel and you can see a bit of her back. Rather creepy given her age, yes, but not quite as salacious as everyone seemingly wants it to be. By saying “Hey look! Kiddie porn!” the media can simultaneously appeal to the base nature of the lowest common denominator while conversely retaining a shred of moral superiority by condemning the photos as something worse than they are. And as for MC’s “embarrassment,” that’s a clear attempt at trying to have her cake and be naked, too - she wants to do things like the Vanity Fair shoot to try and seem more “mature” or “adult,” but after the fact disown it and blame the magazine for “manipulating” her in order to safe face with her fanbase that sees her as Ms. Teen Wholesome USA. Pretty crass on both ends of the spectrum.

But that doesn’t change the fact that this picture is pretty darn pervy. Apparently the “best of both worlds referred to in the “Hannah Montana” theme song are “incest” and “pedophilia.” I was at the Phoenix Art Museum this weekend, and the current “Passport to Europe” exhibit features at least two paintings depicting Lot and his daughters - eerily similar to what we see here.

You know what else is weird? Why don’t we ever see her mom? I actually thought she was dead, like she is in the show, but turns out - not true!
