Upfront week - ‘Miss Guided’ expelled; ‘Reaper’ benefits

Monday, May 12th, 2008 by Albert Ching

mgdet1.jpgMore news from upfront week - as predicted, “Miss Guided” has officially been yanked, according to the Los Angeles Times Show Tracker blog. This news comes before ABC’s upfront presentation tomorrow morning in New York City, and after E!’s Watch with Kristin got our hopes up this morning, saying the comedy was “likely to be picked up.”

“Miss Guided” was a good show in a very weak current sitcom climate, due in large part to the cast, especially Judy Greer and Chris Parnell, and it also seemed like a perfect show to pair with “Scrubs,” which Zach Braff confirmed on his Myreaperd.jpgSpace blog is going to ABC (which everyone already knew, but oddly enough, was subsequently deleted). With “Miss Guided” dismissed, and Braff’s comments that “Scrubs” is going to end in “the fall,” it seems that ABC might roll out the episodes two at a time, especially since they’ll be wrapped early (they’re filming the final season right now).

In happier news, “Reaper” has been renewed, albeit as a midseason replacement and only for 13 episodes. I watched the first couple episodes and then lost interest, but friends have been telling me it’s only gotten better, so hopefully they’ll be copious repeats over the summer to catch up on.

‘Miss Guided’ ends its season tonight!

mgdet.jpgYes, that’s only two weeks after it first aired. No, it’s not because it was canceled - although that very well might happen, since it finished fourth in its time slot every airing except for the first one (which benefited from a “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in).

Only seven episodes of “Miss Guided” were produced, total. And that number wasn’t even shortened due to the writer’s strike - that’s all that was originally ordered. The fact that they were rolled out two at a time certainly indicates a lack of faith on ABC’s part, but could have just as easily been due to a dearth of sitcoms (or half hour programming in general) to accompany the show.

I enjoyed the show, though whether I would have paid quite as much attention to it if other comedies (your “Office”s, your “30 Rock”s, your “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”s) were in new episodes is uncertain. Judy Greer is great, and though at first I thought she was doing yeoman’s work elevating merely adequate material, the last couple episodes mostly delivered on the “wacky high school” promise. Not necessarily hilarious, but charming. Chris Parnell is great too, of course. And dropping the “/” from the title (the original punctuation was the eye roll-inducing “Miss/Guided”) was a much-needed touch, as well. But really, it was Greer that made the show work, playing a character that was wacky enough to be funny and endearing but never broad enough to be unrealistic. Plus, it had this great exchange:

Judy Greer’s character:
You just need to think outside the box.
Hunky Spanish teacher guy: I believe the expression is “think outside the bun.”

I don’t expect that we’ll see this show again after tonight, so if you were at all curious about it, tune in to ABC at 7.

Don’t ‘Miss Guided’

greerdet.jpgWell, that was a freebie.

“Miss Guided,” the new ABC sitcom starring the ever-effervescent Judy Greer (known for hilarious guest spots as Kitty Sanchez on “Arrested Development” and Fatty McGoo on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and a role on the extremely short-lived “Love Monkey”), has its “official” premiere tonight. “Official” is in quotation marks (why do people call quotation marks just “quotes”? how did that start?) because it actually aired already on Tuesday night. It was the pilot, which showed promise, but suffered from the same problem as most comedy pilots - too much exposition, not enough jokes. It reminded me a lot of another single-camera ABC sitcom - “Samantha Who?” - in that it was amusing enough to be tolerable, but not clever enough to catch on a regular basis, unlike an “Aliens In America” (which is seriously great. really!). These episodes, I think, should fare better - no matter how you feel about guest star/series executive producer/goofball Ashton Kutcher (also on tonight - the famously pregnant Jamie Lynn Spears). And Greer is so great, that she elevates the material no matter what. The show’s worst crime isn’t having a pilot that was only average, though, that distinction goes to its use of a “Miss ____” pun title, especially with those of us with still-fresh memories of “Miss Match.” Keep your eye out for “Miss Tree,” the new CBS procedural next year, about a spunky young detective crackin’ cases.

There’s two episodes on tonight (7 and 7:30 p.m. local time), one with the dubious storyline of Greer’s character placing last on a student list of the most “doable” (ABC’s word, honestly) members of the faculty. Given that the show includes, among others, Chris Parnell as a teacher (hey, “Lazy Sunday” was great, but he’s not exactly as dreamy as Andy Samberg), that seems to be the type of leap in logic that only a sitcom plot device could provide.
