What’s on - more premieres! Fox sitcoms! ‘Do Not Disturb’!

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 by Albert Ching

donotdisturb.jpg

“Do Not Disturb,” a new Fox sitcom about the wacky goings-on at a wacky New York City hotel, debuts tonight (8:30 p.m., Fox). Somewhat improbably, it stars Niecy Nash, who has been delightful for years on “Reno 911!” and Jerry O’Connell, always tolerable in doomed shows from “Camp Wilder” to “Carpoolers.” To give it some added sitcom street cred, the first episode was directed by Jason “Arrested Development” Bateman - but despite that, it still looks just like a lot of other broad, laugh track ensemble/workplace sitcoms that have come and gone on Fox in recent years like “Stacked” and “Life on a Stick.” Perhaps I’m wrong!

Before that is the return of “‘Til Death” (8 p.m., Fox) a show that I would never be interested in other than the fact that J.B. Smoove, so great as Leon on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is now part of the cast. So there’s that going for it. Given the episode descriptions, he even seems to be playing a similar role, as in this episode he’s moving in with Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher.

What’s on - Pacey is back! ‘Fringe’! Also, ‘Privileged,’ more

fringedet.jpg

The much-hyped “Fringe” debuts tonight (7 p.m., Fox). I’m not that into the premise and nothing that’s been shown so far has really wowed me, especially since they’re like “FROM THE CREATOR OF ‘LOST’” and you’re all “yay!” and then “AND TWO OF THE WRITERS OF ‘TRANSFORMERS’” and you’re all, oh, lame, gross. But yeah, it is J.J. Abrams, who has an alright-ish track record (”Lost,” which he co-created with Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Lieber, awesome. “Alias,” which he created solo, not always so awesome). And it’s also the return to network TV of “Dawson’s Creek” vet (and “Mighty Ducks” alum) Joshua Jackson, who was always my favorite dude on that show (admittedly, he didn’t have great competition). The premiere is 95 minutes with “limited commercials” (aren’t they all?) so hopefully that’ll be sitthroughable.

And there’s also the second episode of the new “90210″ (7 p.m., The CW), which I found to be fairly enjoyable last week. I was sort of bored by it by the second hour, but I don’t know if the latter half truly was worse or if two hours is just too much of nearly any show that’s not, say, “Lost.”

The idea of AnnaLynne McCord, who looks old enough to be a teacher, playing someone turning 16 is pretty funny, and perfectly keeping in with “90210″ tradition. The whole show actually felt very ’90s, with little modern edge (which I didn’t really mind, actually), down to the fake looking Mortal Kombat-esque fighting game those dudes were playing. It’s pretty tame and quaint given how stakes have been raised in recent teen dramas, but that might be OK. And obviously Jessica Walter is great, and the cameo from Tilly and the Wall warmed my soul.

After “90210″ is “Privileged” (8 p.m., The CW). Keeping with the CW mandate of 90% of their shows involving upscale snotty kids, where a normal lady gets a job tutoring two snotty kids.

We’ve also got the annual “Fashion Rocks” (8 p.m. CBS), which I thought was just a two hour advertisement but turns out to actually be a benefit for Stand Up To Cancer. Boy, do I feel like a jerk!

What’s on - ‘Terminator’ season premiere

Monday, September 8th, 2008 by Albert Ching

term.jpg

The second season of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” premieres tonight (7 p.m., Fox).  Last year (well, earlier this year) was like an inverted bell curve for me - really dug it at the beginning, lost interest in the middle, liked it again towards the end. We’ll see how it goes this time around, but they definitely win points with me for adding Shirley Manson, lead singer of my beloved ’90s band Garbage, to the cast, though clearly her actual abilities as an actor is somewhat of a question mark at this point. Also, Dean Winters guest stars tonight. Who doesn’t love Dean Winters?

Up against “Terminator” is “Gossip Girl” (7 p.m., The CW). The Blair dating a secret “Lord” storyline is pretty endearingly ridiculous, especially when he started randomly speaking in an English accent, plus any promise of scheming Chuck = awesome. But who could possibly care about Nate and the old lady?

Also on tonight: the season finale of “High School Musical: Get in the Picture” (7 p.m., ABC). I actually don’t know much about this show other than the clips they’ve shown on “The Soup,” but I figured the prize was a part in “High School Musical 3″ (which didn’t make a ton of sense to me since the movie comes out next month, but maybe this show has been in the can for a while).  Apparently what’s actually at stake is the lead role in a music video that will play over the end credits of the movie. Well, that’s…something. Good for them!

What’s on - ‘Bones’ and ‘ANTM’ season premieres

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 by Albert Ching

bones.jpg

Bones
7 p.m., Fox

“Bones” is back, for a respectable fourth season, and with a two hour episode, to boot. The hook: the season premiere takes place in London! That’s right, imagine all the story possibilities. Brennan drinks tea. Booth gets confused when someone calls a truck a “lorry.” Something to do with murder and human remains. It practically writes itself! They also meet their “British counterparts,” played by Indira Varma and Andrew Buchan, actors that you would probably know if you were, in fact, British. All the sexual tension, less of the dental hygiene. Oh man, so many cliche British jokes!

America’s Next Top Model
7 p.m., The CW

This season (Cycle 11, if you’re keeping track), features a transgendered contest; to borrow a line from another fashion-based TV show, a literal hot tranny mess. But it’s a good thing “ANTM” isn’t exploiting this aspect. Let’s see The CW’s official word on tonight’s two hour premiere - “CYCLE 11 KICKS OFF IN LOS ANGELES WITH A TRANSGENDER CONTESTANT.” Hmm, OK. Let’s keep reading…”one of the models making waves causes a stir when she reveals that she’s transgendered.” Maybe all the contestants this year should be transgendered.

Top Design
10 p.m., Bravo

The second season premiere, with the “Bravo reality TV show” formula extended to the field of interior design. Just from looks alone, I think we should all cheer for Kerry.

Republic National Convention
7 p.m., a bunch of channels

On Cinematical today:

What’s on - Teen Choice awards, ‘Luke’s Parental Advisory,’ more

Monday, August 4th, 2008 by Albert Ching

miley.jpg

Teen Choice Awards
7 p.m., Fox

There is really only one reason to watch an awards show like this, and it’s to see adult celebrities - nearly 45-year-old Steve Carell, 39-year-old Josh Holloway and 31-year-old Jaime Pressly are among those announced for the shows - dressed “casually” to appear all “hip” with the “kids.” It’s not quite as egregious here as it is for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, but it’s still pretty good. Also, there’s the fact that all of the winners have already been announced since the ceremony was this weekend, so I can go ahead and (SPOILER ALERT!) tell you guys that Ryan Sheckler won “Choice MySpacer.” There, you don’t have to tune in now. The ubiquitous Miley Cyrus hosts.

Luke’s Parental Advisory
10:30 p.m., VH1

Hey, have you ever wanted to watch a washed-up personality from the music industry as he and his family encounter deal with everyday-type activities? Well, if “The Osbournes,” “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” “Tuckerville,” “Run’s House,” “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood,” and “Being Bobby Brown” weren’t enough, here’s another one, starring Luther Campbell, formerly known as the frontman of notoriously dirty rap act 2 Live Crew. See, they used to be really controversial, right? And now he’s just a regular family guy, you see? TV magic!

Nashville Star
9 p.m., NBC

Suffering from Cyrus-family withdrawals? Well, upon completion of the Teen Choice Awards, just slide over to NBC for the sixth season finale of “Nashville Star,” which this time around was hosted by papa Billy Ray. It’s between Gabe Garcia, Melissa Lawson and Shawn Mayer - one of them will follow in the footsteps of “Nashville Star” legends like the unforgettable Brad Cotter, Angela Hacker and Erika Jo. Immediately before this: the second season finale of “American Gladiators.”

Secret Diary of a Call Girl
10:30 p.m., Showtime

British shows have short seasons, so after only eight episodes, this Billie Piper-starred import is ending its initial American run. Additional seasons (or as they call them, “series” - those wacky Brits!) are in the works, though. It’s been a big few days for Piper fans - last Friday, the fouth season finale of “Doctor Who,” which she recently returned to for a stretch of episodes, aired on Sci Fi.

What’s on - ‘New Millennium’ ends, ‘Swingtown,’ more

Thursday, June 26th, 2008 by Albert Ching

iltm.jpg

I Love the New Millennium
9 p.m. and 10 p.m., VH1

Yes, VH1 is pretty impatient if they couldn’t wait another two years to do “I Love the New Millennium.” But unfortunately they don’t have the balls to do “I Love 2008″ less than halfway through the year, as the series ends tonight with “I Love 2006″ at 9 and “I Love 2007″ immediately after. Still pretty great, though, especially since they could just reconstitute episodes of “Best Week Ever” for these editions (though without the A-team of Hal Sparks and Michael Ian Black). How about that Larry Craig, guy, right? If you asked me he knew exactly what he was doing in that airport stall!

Hopkins
9 p.m., ABC

Six-part documentary on Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Hospital, following-up on the critically acclaimed 2000 ABC News series “Hopkins 24/7.” That’s surprisingly un-trashy for network TV during the summer. What, no “Celebrity Circus” tonight? Was Stacey Dash phenomenal last night or what!

Swingtown
9 p.m., CBS

Ah, much better. Susan (Molly Parker) and Bruce (Jack Davenport) head out for a weekend at their cabin - with sexy results. At least, I presume so.

Reno 911!
10:30 p.m., Comedy Central

Travis Junior (Ben Garant) runs for office. He should run against Vinnie Van Lowe (joke courtesy of Justin Shapiro).

What’s on - David wins ‘Idol,’ ‘Legal’ recesses, more

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 by Albert Ching

idol.jpg
American Idol
7 p.m., Fox

That picture up there just might be the silliest thing ever associated with “American Idol,” trumping the ponyhawk, anything Paula has said and the collective existnce of Messrs. Aiken and Hicks. Last night was all about the DUEL between David Archuelta and David Cook, with all the boxing metaphors and Jim Lampley one could handle. So what’s tonight about, other than an over-bloated results show where only the last five minutes could possibly hold any interest? Well, we’ve got a performance from season four winner Carrie Underwood, and also one from…George Michael. Well, that’s an odd choice. My gut says Cook is your winner, but my brain says it probably doesn’t really matter.

andersonhead.jpgLaw & Order
9 p.m., NBC
This season finale of “Law & Order” is lucky number 18. Thanks to Wikipedia, here are some other shows that were part of NBC’s lineup when “L&O” debuted in 1990: the short-lived “Ferris Bueller” sitcom co-starring Jennifer Aniston, “Matlock,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Dear John,” “Empty Nest.” Other shows starting that same season: “Wings” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Would live be better if we had gotten 18 seasons of “Wings” instead of “Law & Order”? Imagine all the schemes Roy could have concocted!

shorehead.jpgBoston Legal
9 p.m., ABC

It’s the fourth season finale of “Boston Legal,” and the latest improbably zany case involves Concord, Massachusetts wanting to secede from the union. That’s not the major thrust of the drama, though, it’s just the vehicle to get Alan (James Spader) and Denny (William Shatner) on OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE COURTROOM! Well, maybe not literally, that’s not really how courtrooms are designed, but opposing counsel.

csihead.jpgCSI: NY
9 p.m., CBS

Elias Koteas guest stars in the fourth season finale. He’s been in a lot of things over the years, but I’ll always remember him most fondly as Casey Jones in the first and third “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movies. Well, I don’t remember the third one so fondly. That one sucked bad. But the first one for sure!

ALSO ON: The third season finale of “Criminal Minds” (8 p.m., CBS), another “Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular” (7 p.m., CBS), the fourth season premiere of “Mind of Mencia” and not a lot else. “Idol” finale and all that, you know.

What’s on - ‘Dancing’ queen crowned, David battle on ‘Idol,’ more

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 by Albert Ching

jtd.jpg

Dancing with the Stars
8 p.m., ABC

Thinking Kristi Yamaguchi is unbeatable after two perfect scores last night? I wouldn’t be so sure - the way “Dancing with the Stars” scoring works (I’m pretty sure, at least), it doesn’t really matter that she got two 30s out of 30, just that she did better than second place Cristián de la Fuente, who got 52 out of 60. So if she has gotten anywhere between a 53 and a 60 (which she got), she would be in essentially the same position. And I can’t imagine voters turning out in droves for her, given that her dominance all season hasn’t exactly endeared the country, and men always do better on this show anyway (the only female winner, Kelly Monaco, was in the show’s nascent first season, and even that was disputed with a silly “dance off” between her and the guy that played Peterman on “Seinfeld”). I do think she’s going to come in second, though, with Jason Taylor probably being the second NFL star (after season three’s Emmitt Smith) to take it all, though I suppose I could see it going the other way without being too shocked, even though I think de la Fuente’s sympathy votes for his arm injury have to be about dried up and he doesn’t have nearly the same American fanbase. I’ve thought way too much about this.

cookhead.jpgAmerican Idol
7 p.m., Fox

Finalists David Cook and David Archuleta will sing songs picked by two ancient dudes - Andrew Lloyd Webber and Clive Davis. Though I was bummed last week about Syesha Mercado, who I thought was easily cooler and more marketable if not a better vocalists than these two dorks, getting eliminated, at least she won’t have to sing 90 seconds of whatever boring tunes those codgers unearth. David Cook will probably win tomorrow and go on to be Daughtry 2.0 (exactly what this world needs!) and maybe David Archuleta can do whatever a 17 year old with no discernible personality but a great voice can do, like go to Broadway as the world’s tiniest Danny Zuko.

samhead.jpgReaper
8 p.m., The CW

It’s the first season finale, but the show was renewed, which means it’ll be back midseason - January 2009 - and we won’t have to hear about what extraordinary yet misplaced efforts the show’s fans will go through to try and get it back on air (there’s a character named Sock! They could have mailed execs socks! Brilliant!). So, a victory all around, especially given the show’s clear handicap of being on The CW and not about fashionable young rich folks (and the failure of other genre shows this season, like “Bionic Woman” and the resurrected “Jericho”). Tonight’s episode involves demons setting a trap for Sam (Brett Harrison), which kind of sounds like every other episode, but surely there will be a twist of some manner.

sharkhead.jpgShark
9 p.m., CBS

Shark’s (James Woods) archenemy has broken out of jail! And he’s out for revenge on Shark! What is Shark gonna do? Shark! OK, I don’t know anything about this show. This is the second season finale, but in reality the series finale (since it wasn’t picked up), so it’s probably too late for me to learn about it. I know it has James Woods, and his name is Shark. But he’s not an actual shark, I’m pretty sure. Though that would be a bold choice. I think it’s actually just a nickname, which is disappointing, and further confirms my suspicions that I did the right move in skipping this show.

ALSO ON: Well, that’s about it. There’s the two hour fifth season finale of “NCIS” (7 p.m., CBS), a show, much like its military abbreviation predecessor “JAG,” keeps coming back year after year despite the fact that I’ve never encountered anyone who watches it.

What’s on - ‘HIMYM,’ ‘Gossip Girl’ season finales, more

Monday, May 19th, 2008 by Albert Ching

himymdet.jpg

How I Met Your Mother
7:30 p.m., CBS

Just a couple weeks ago, people online were at least relatively sure that Stella (Sarah Chalke) would end up as the titular “Mother.” But with Bill Lawrence saying that “Scrubs” could go on for many years past next season (Lawrence seemingly being the only person that thinks that’s a good idea), that puts the whole thing into question. On one hand, it seems too obvious for Stella to be the mother, on the other hand, we’re going into season four, and the show just barely gets renewed each spring, maybe resolving that loose end wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Since the show really is about a lot more than the gimmicky framing device, it probably could continue past the revelation, though I imagine it’ll be drawn out a while longer, and past tonight’s third season finale. Oh, and the above picture certainly suggests that Ted and Barney become friends again, but maybe it’s just a flashback - or maybe I’m just using an old picture! Such suspense.

chuck.jpgGossip Girl
7 p.m., The CW

The “Gossip Girl” backlash has started! Maybe revolving an entire lineup around “GG” ripoffs wasn’t a great idea. After revolving last week’s murder subplot rather tidily, we’re all systems go for Chuck’s Dad and Blair’s Mom to get married - or are we! What about that kiss that Blair’s Mom and Dan’s Dad shared last week? I really don’t know why Dan’s Dad is so into Blair’s Mom, he seems cool and she seems like a real square. I also don’t know why a show that’s so hot and hip with young people is focusing so much on parents - Jim Walsh weeps! First season finale.

wilson.jpgHouse
8 p.m.,
Fox
I haven’t watched “House” since it came back post-strike. Have I missed anything? Some diagnoses? Maybe some sarcasm? Apparently last week’s Fred Durst role extends into tonight’s fourth season finale, so that’s…something. Also, according to official Fox press, House’s friendship with Wilson is tested “beyond limits.” That’s right, BEYOND LIMITS. You know the normal limits for House and Wilson’s friendship? This goes some point beyond that!

bachelorette.jpgThe Bachelorette
8:02 p.m
., ABC
DeAnna Pappas was one of two finalists of last fall’s 11th (!) season of “The Bachelor,” when the dude decided not to give roses to either of them. The other one has seemingly moved on with her life, but Pappas has not, so she’s starring in this, the fourth season of “The Bachelorette.” Will she finally find love on a TV show like she’s always dreamed? Why are there so many seasons of “The Bachelor” and so few of “The Bachelorette”? Why does the Firefox spell check seem to think that “Bachelorette” isn’t a real word? Tune in for possibly none of those answers!

ALSO ON: The surprisingly not all that drawn out (three hours over two days) “Dancing with the Stars” season finale begins (7 p.m., ABC); “American Gladiators” attempts to break though the bad ratings gauntlet (7 p.m., NBC); and “Big Bang Theory” (7 p.m., CBS), “Bones” (7 p.m., Fox), “Paradise Hotel” (8 p.m., My Network TV), “One Tree Hill” (8 p.m., The CW), “Two and a Half Men” (8 p.m., CBS) and “Rules of Engagement” (8:30 p.m., CBS) all get season finales. So does the third round of “Flavor of Love” (9 p.m., VH1).

What’s on - ‘Office’ and ‘Earl’ season finales, new ‘Lost,’ more

Thursday, May 15th, 2008 by Albert Ching

officeearl.jpg

My Name Is Earl, The Office
7 p.m. and 8 p.m., NBC

It’s the season finales of “My Name Is Earl” and “The Office” - so why aren’t people more excited? Is it because the shows never regained momentum post the strike-induced hiatus? Is it because the shows aren’t as good as they once were? “The Office” is still funny, and has had some genuinely great episodes this year (Michael and Dwight hanging with apparent cokehead Ryan, totally awesome), but seems to have lost a lot of the zip and buzz (zip and buzz! morning zoo crew!) it once had. “Earl,” meanwhile, seemingly found new relevance at the beginning of the season with the main character in jail, but has slid into “nearly unwatchable” territory these last few weeks. Hopefully these episodes fare better - “Office” promises tons of surprises! And who doesn’t love surprises, right? The episode is called “Goodbye, Toby,” though, so if one of them involves Toby going somewhere I wouldn’t consider that very surprising.

luthorhead.jpgSmallville
7 p.m., The CW
Most likely, this (the seventh season finale) is Michael Rosenbaum’s last episode of “Smallville,” since he’s left the show. In a way, it seems kind of odd, since he is just now becoming “totally evil” instead of “morally ambiguous,” but it actually makes sense given that the whole show is about the relationship between Clark (Tom Welling) and Lex, and the latter’s slow turn from “generally nice dude” to “evil supervillain.” So now that he’s at that point, it seems that the character arc is pretty much done, or else you don’t have “Smallville” - you have a Superman show. So what doesn’t make sense, perhaps, is that the show is continuing on for another season, but at least you creepy Chloe fans can be happy that Allison Mack will be back (a rhyme).

losthead.jpgLost
8 p.m., ABC

The dude that plays Keamy (Kevin Durand) is such perfect casting. He just seems like such a d-bag, that I’m really rooting for Sayid to kill him in some bizarre fashion. His Wikipedia article was obviously edited by his publicist, though. Anyway, this is the first part of the allegedly three-part “Lost” season finale, and parts two and three will air on May 29. Yes, that means no “Lost” on May 22. It’s going to be tough. Real tough. Especially considering this one will probably end with some kind of awesome cliffhanger. The previews have been showing the Oceanic 6 leaving the island, which still seems like a huge spoiler even if we’ve known about it for months.

er.jpgER
9 p.m., NBC

Technically, since next season is its last and that will be the “series finale,” this is the last “ER” season finale - ever! And we’ve had 13 ones before this! That makes this sort of historically significant, right? Plus, Steve Buscemi is guest starring, so you know it’s important (or an Adam Sandler movie). Also, Luka (Goran Visnjic) is apparently back, for tonight at least. Yay!

ALSO ON: Season finales all up in here - CBS procedurals “CSI” (8 p.m., CBS) and “Without a Trace” (9 p.m., CBS); The CW’s…supernatural drama, “Supernatural” (8 p.m., The CW); Fox reality shows for dumb people, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” (7 p.m., Fox) and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” (8 p.m., Fox); and the Comedy Central cartoon for even dumber people, “Lil’ Bush” (10:30 p.m., Comedy Central). Also, new episodes on ABC - “Ugly Betty” (7 p.m., ABC) and “Grey’s Anatomy” (8 p.m., ABC), both of which see season finales next week.
